Job Description

The Pharmacy Department at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute places emphasis on the values of reliability, professionalism, cooperation, teamwork, communication, positivity, and inclusiveness.   The Pharmacy Technician III, Materials Management is responsible for providing support to pharmacy operations under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist. 

The Pharmacy Technician III, Materials Management will staff in pharmacy locations/areas as required.  Additional responsibilities may include conducting training and orientation of staff members in any area and providing ongoing support and mentorship to more junior staff. The Pharmacy Technician III, Materials Management will lead one special project per year, when applicable.

This position?s work location is onsite, full-time on campus in Dana-Farber Brigham Cancer Center at South Shore Health .

Pharmacy Technician Duties:

  • Practices as a pharmacy technician in accordance with all federal, state, DFCI and Joint Commission policies, regulations, and standards.
  • Utilizes multiple systems such as EHR (Electronic Health Record), inventory management systems, medication storage equipment, and other systems to complete and document duties along with identifying issues and reporting them as necessary.
  • Maintains the pharmacy inventory (e.g. receiving, sorting, stocking, replenishment, and rotation of the stock); performs and documents quality control steps required for safety and regulatory requirements (e.g. checking expiration date and cycle counting).
  • May be assigned to cross-cover other pharmacy locations or areas (e.g. processing room, outpatient, etc.).
  • Conducts the training and orientation of staff members in any area.
  • Provides ongoing support and mentorship to more junior staff, when applicable.
  • Creates and/or revises training documentation for the staff education.
  • Communicates and escalates issues or problems.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Materials Management Technician Duties:

  • Receives and fulfills orders from DFCI various departments, vendors and/or sponsors following the established procedures including quality control steps to ensure proper entry of data in the pharmacy systems.
  • Transports inventory and supplies as necessary to storage locations daily.
  • Participates in physical inventory semi-annually.
  • Supports invoice reconciliation process and preparing reports for the financial month-end.
  • Leads one special project per year, when applicable.
  • Stocks emergency medications (e.g. code carts and emergency boxes) and clinic stock boxes as appropriate by site.
  • Provide materials management support for regional campuses as necessary (e.g., receiving issues, drug shortage management, NDC maintenance, etc.).
  • May be asked to provide cross-location coverage (Chestnut Hill, Longwood and regional campuses) if needed.
  • Serves as a super user for the drug storage automation, and the pharmacy inventory system.
  • Maintains and performs the activities for Automated Dispensing Cabinets (ADS) as well as replenishment of Central Pharmacies, including replenishment and retrieval of Federal controlled substances to and from ADS and or other storage locations.

  • Minimum Education: High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Minimum Experience: 5 years of pharmacy technician experience, with at least 2 years of experience of compounding, outpatient/retail, or inventory management experience.
  • License/Certification/Registration: Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy Registration as a Pharmacy Technician required. National Pharmacy Technician Certification (PTCB or ExCPT), preferred. 
  • Curriculum Requirements : Refer to Appendix A for DFCI Project University courses and supplemental Supply Chain and Inventory Management Certificate.

  • Ability to adjust work time and schedule to meet daily demands in fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to utilize pharmacy technology systems and Microsoft Excel, intermediate.
  • Ability to independently troubleshoot issues and assist in resolution or escalation to the appropriate resource.
  • Ability to treat all others (fellow pharmacy staff, patients, nurses, providers, support personnel, etc.) with the utmost professionalism and respect.
  • Ability to effectively work within a collaborative team-focused environment.
  • Participate in department meetings and functions to promote a successful and efficient pharmacy workgroup.
  • Ability to train and orient the new staff.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrate critical thinking skills (ability to analyze information objectively and make a reasoned judgment).
  • Strong attention to details.
  • Ability to provide effective feedback.
