About the Indiana Archives & Records Administration (IARA):

 

The Indiana Archives and Records Administration assists State and local governments in the cost-effective, efficient and secure management of governmental records, by providing services throughout the life cycle of records, including creation, use, records inventory and scheduling, storage, and disposition.

 

Role Overview

 

The Indiana Archives and Records Administration is seeking a Processing Intern to join the Indiana State Archives division in the summer of 2025. The State Archives collection is the largest archival collection in the state and comprises over 120,000 cubic feet of records from state and local government. The intern will learn how to process, arrange, and describe a range of archival materials. The agency is preparing to move to a new building in 2026, and the intern will assist with unique projects related to the upcoming move. The intern may also assist with social media creation, reference work, and programming depending on the intern’s interests and strengths.

 

Sample projects for this internship include:

  • Processing and rehousing paper and photographic records
  • Basic conservation skills
  • Appraisal of archival records
  • Arranging and describing archival records and writing finding aids
  • Experience with an archival content management system

 

The internship is located at the Indiana State Archives, 6440 East 30th Street, Indianapolis, IN.

 

Salary Statement

 

The hourly wage for this position traditionally starts at $16.24 per hour for current undergraduate students and $17.24 per hour for those with an earned bachelor’s degree.

 

A Day in the Life:

 

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Identify and execute one major project related to agency needs and academic area of study
  • Create, develop, and sustain the programmatic efforts for the assigned discipline
  • Analyze data and feedback to provide recommendations 
  • Partner with other relevant stakeholders to promote and enhance the quality of projects
  • Collaborate with State of Indiana agencies to ensure effective implementation of internal and external initiatives

What You'll Need for Success:

 

  • Pursuing a degree in liberal arts, social sciences, or humanities 
  • Have an interest in records, information, and/or data management 
  • Must conduct oneself in a professional manner and be able to work accurately and efficiently with minimal supervision 
  • Ability to lift 40 lbs. 
  • Applicants for positions in this class must be currently enrolled students in an undergraduate degree program at an accredited educational institution 

 

Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:

 

This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period
