Position Purpose

Under general supervision, the Tasting Room Assistant Manager's responsibilities include providing leadership and direction in the Tasting Room, coordinating point of sale materials and merchandise, processing transactions, and offering exceptional customer service to guests visiting the Tasting Room and/or Wine Shop. As a part of the Tasting Room management team, the Assistant Manager actively works to drive sales and wine club sign-ups, model successful sales techniques, control costs, manage resources and to deliver revenue and operating profit to plan.

Functional Responsibility

•  Supervises the day-to-day operations and assigned staff in accordance with management's direction
•  Leads in a constructive manner by example; demonstrates and encourages a strong work ethic and fosters an environment of trust and respect
•  Guides team in the proper use of assets and resources to avoid waste and ensure cost-effective operations
•  Monitors performance and regularly communicates with team to achieve mutual understanding, maintain level of productivity, and deliver desired results
•  Partners with immediate manager to determine staffing needs
•  Ensures employees have a safe, healthy, and rewarding work environment, provides applicable safety training and resolves/reports safety issues to management
•  Supports change initiatives and company decisions in an effective manner
•  Immediately informs management and addresses employee issues, concerns, and complaints in an objective and confidential manner
•  Ensures employees are trained on the policies, processes, and procedures related to functional area; maintains company and regulatory compliance during day-day-operations
•  Adheres to departmental GPS (Performance Management) guidelines and ensures proper GPS documentation; trains employees to do the job; identifies and makes suggestions for training needs and development opportunities

Essential Duties

•  Manages the day-to-day functions of the Tasting Room and provides direction to Tasting Room staff
•  Coordinates with leadership on winery wide issues
•  Partners with Tasting Room Manager to develop individual performance goals aligned with Company goals and communicates clearly defined objectives
•  Opens and closes Tasting Room as needed
•  Serves as Manager on Duty when Tasting Room Manager is not on site
•  Assists in the onboarding of new employees, including Tasting Room operations, winery history and brand messaging
•  Troubleshoots POS system issues when required
•  Supports sales by successfully operating the POS system, ringing sales, placing shipping orders, opening and reconciling cash drawers accurately
•  Manages cash handling of multiple POS machines, including cash drawer reconciliations, bank deposits and change orders
•  Updates Tasting Room collateral, such as menus, price sheets, tasting mats and wine club forms
•  With input from the Tasting Room and DTC Managers, orders wines weekly to maintain onsite inventory (Napa/Geyserville locations)
•  Responds to customer communications professionally and in a timely manner
•  Provides back-up assistance as Tasting Room attendant during lunches and under-staffed periods
•  Interacts with the Compliance Department regarding changes to state shipping laws and DFW state permits
•  Enters new merchandise items into retail and compliance software systems; receives, prices, stocks and displays non-wine merchandise, as needed
•  Assists Tasting Room Manager with preparation of department budget and controlling costs

Minimum Requirements

Education and Experience

•  High school diploma or GED; 2+ years of college coursework in Hospitality or Hotel Management preferred
•  3+ years of experience of customer service
•  2+ years supervising a team leadership experience in a retail, hospitality or similar environment
•  Experience in a wine tasting environment a plus
•  Must be 21 years of age in order to pour, serve, and taste wine

Certificates and Licenses

•  Required to obtain Responsible Beverage Service and Food Safety certificates after hire

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

•  Flexible schedule; must be able to work weekends, holidays and occasional evenings
•  Proven ability to effectively communicate and provide exceptional customer service to diverse groups
•  Meets changing priorities in the workplace with flexibility and enthusiasm
•  Solution-oriented and resourceful problem-solving skills in a fast-paced work environment
•  Intermediate business math skills
•  Maintains a professional appearance and demeanor
•  Knowledge of wine, food and pairings
•  Excellent writing skills, with strong grasp of grammar; capable of creating business correspondence
•  Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships in a team environment to achieve department and Company goals
•  Proficient in retail and reservations software (VinSuite, RMS and Tock experience a plus) and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Power Point, Outlook, Excel)
•  Foreign language skills a plus

•  Occasionally may be required to lift and carry cases of wine
•  May need to determine color, taste and smell of wine using eyes, tongue, and nose
