Job Description

This creative, problem-solving individual will offer visual communication solutions for a range of strategic projects undertaken by the University Communications office. Responsibilities will include creative design and overall creative concepts and production for the execution of projects.

Reporting to the Director of Creative Strategy, we are seeking a Sr. Graphic Designer who will play a lead design role in cross-functional department that include graphic designers, writers, videographers, web designers and others. The person in this position must have excellent interpersonal communication skills, the ability to work collaboratively on creative projects, and have strong design skills and an aesthetic that demonstrates an understanding of current and emerging trends. It is essential the Sr. Graphic Designer have proven experience designing within brand guidelines. This position will have opportunities to work collaboratively with other designers on the University Communications creative team and to mentor junior members of the team.

The Sr. Graphic Designer will be responsible to design materials within Adobe Creative Suite and publish completed designs in the University-wide template portals: Marq and Canva for collateral and campaigns where specific elements must be locked, and others left open for partners across the University to tailor as needed.

The position will work closely with members of the University Communications team and will also maintain relationships with stakeholders across the University to maximize the team impact towards university-wide objectives.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Work independently and in cross-functional groups on a variety of strategic communications projects that require creative problem-solving and concepting. This includes taking a lead design role on cross-functional teams, ensuring that all related print and digital design work is of highest quality, consistent, and supports the goals of the individual project.
  • Create a wide range of visual materials. Examples include logos, signage, annual reports, ads, publications, branded collateral, social media graphics, event promotions, image creation, and motion graphics.
  • Direct photo shoots and illustration assignments.
  • Partner with editors, writers, web and video professionals, and others to develop holistic creative solutions.
  • Serve as a brand ambassador and communicate and educate Johns Hopkins colleagues on creative and brand tools and assets.
  • Work on multiple projects concurrently while meeting deadlines and following schedules.
  • Contribute to creative concept presentations to leadership and others.
  • Work to ensure proper balance of form and function in all materials.

  • Ability to lead projects within a complex and decentralized environment.
  • Attention to detail, highly organized and excellent follow through.
  • Understanding of templated resource tools (Marq and Canva) or ability to learn quickly to get up to speed and act as a super user for the department.
  • Ability to multi-task and produce under pressure of multiple and conflicting deadlines.
  • Must be autonomous and able to self-manage, work independently and set own priorities.
  • Strategic thinker able to identify long-term opportunities and trends.
  • Proactive ability to find opportunities for and present recommendations to improve efficiency and enhance creative problem-solving support for department.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in fine arts, graphic design, or related field.
  • Four year's experience and a portfolio.
  • Link(s) to a portfolio of recent work must be submitted with application.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity using creative templated tools (ex. Marq, Canva).
  • Familiarity with motion graphic animation tools (ex. After effects, Spark, Canva).
  • Proven ability to develop, document and communicate strategic guidance.

Starting Salary Range: Min $53,300 - Max $93,500 Annually (Targeted $77,400; Commensurate with experience)

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
