Job Description

The Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (PSC) is a joint effort of Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh. Established in 1986, PSC is supported by several federal agencies, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and private industry. PSC provides university, government and industrial researchers with access to several of the most powerful systems for high-performance computing, communications and data storage available to scientists, engineers and scholars nationwide for unclassified research. PSC advances the state of the art in high-performance computing, communications and data analytics and offers a flexible environment for solving the largest and most challenging problems in computational science.

As a Senior Computational Scientist , you will have the opportunity to support research applications, solving problems with internal and external users as they accomplish discovery on modern high-performance computing platforms. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who thrives in an interesting and challenging work environment. You will provide in-depth consultation and may lead a team to help address users' research and support questions. Your services may also include proposal development and technical training to ensure that allocations are managed, and outputs are working properly. You will ensure customer satisfaction by advising customers on configurations, practices and policies that may favorably impact software performance.

Core responsibilities include:

  • Collaborate with research teams in developing, installing, documenting, porting, debugging and optimizing application-level research software in your field of scientific expertise.
  • Provide solutions to issues reported by PSC's community of users, referred to you by the PSC help desk because of your expertise, in a timely manner.
  • Learn and keep current with high performance computing technologies.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent, with strong scientific computing emphasis.
  • 5 to 8 years' experience with the following: Building, installing, maintaining, debugging and troubleshooting application-level software in UNIX systems, using shell scripting and batch schedulers such as Slurm. Managing competing requirements in a diverse stakeholder population, exhibiting excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills with dedication to diversity, equity and inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. degree.
  • Expertise in computational condensed matter physics, quantum chemistry, or computational materials science, including ab initio electronic structure calculations.
  • Experience with parallel programming models (e.g., use of OpenMP, MPI, CUDA).
  • Experience with software installation and management frameworks such as Modules, LMOD, Spack etc.
  • Familiarity with machine learning and data analytics.
  • Familiarity with current approaches to quantum computing.

Additional Information:

  • Sponsorship : Applicants for this position must be currently legally authorized to work for CMU in the United States. CMU will not sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa for this opportunity .
  • Work Posture: This position is operating on a hybrid schedule, with an on-campus/in office presence 3 days a week.
  • This is a full - time (37.5 hours/week), non-exempt position
  • Travel Requirements: You should be able to travel both domestically and internationally and be willing to work outside of normal business hours as needed.
  • Funding : This is a grant-funded position.
