SUMMARY:
The School Safety Coordinator supports the safety of students and school district staff within Marquette-Alger RESA’s service area by developing and assisting with comprehensive safety plans, facilitating training, and coordinating with local agencies for emergency preparedness. The responsibilities include managing safety initiatives, securing funding, conducting vulnerability assessments, and evaluating safety programs to enhance security and prevent violence, ensuring a safe and supportive educational environment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree or relevant work experience
- Five years of experience in law enforcement, criminal justice, or security required
- Ability and willingness to become deputized in Marquette and Alger counties
- Strong leadership and collaboration skills
- Demonstrated ability to:
- Organize short and long term projects
- Establish and maintain filing systems (physical and electronic)
- Problem-solve and apply principles of logical thinking
- Accurately complete fiscal procedures
- Proficiency with software/applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google Suite, and Zoom
- Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
- Must demonstrate initiative and the ability to work independently
- Professional attitude and appearance
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Prior experience working in an educational setting at the district or county level
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop and disseminate model safety plans and protocols: Create templates and guidelines for individual school districts to adapt and implement, ensuring consistency across the two-county area. This includes emergency procedures, threat assessment protocols, and safety policies. Facilitate communication and collaboration between individual schools and the RESA on safety-related matters.
- Provide guidance and technical assistance: Offer support to individual schools in developing, implementing, and evaluating their safety plans. Conduct site visits, offer consultations, and answer questions.
- Facilitate training and professional development: Organize workshops and training sessions for school staff on various safety topics, such as emergency response, crisis intervention, conflict resolution, and threat assessment.
- Coordinate with county-level agencies: Build relationships with law enforcement, fire departments, emergency management, public health agencies, mental health agencies, and other relevant organizations to ensure a coordinated response to incidents and to access resources for schools.
- Manage region-wide safety initiatives: Oversee programs related to school safety, such as violence prevention, anti-bullying, and mental health awareness.
- Secure funding and resources: Identify and pursue grant opportunities to support school safety initiatives across the two-county area. Manage budgets and allocate resources effectively.
- Represent the RESA on safety committees: Participate in county-level committees focused on school safety, emergency management, and community health.
- Communicate with stakeholders: Disseminate safety information and updates to school administrators, staff, parents, and the community.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES CONTINUED:
- Stay abreast of best practices and legislation: Keep up-to-date on the latest research, trends, and legal requirements related to school safety. Attend meetings and professional workshops as needed to enhance skills, knowledge, and Agency procedures
- Provide expert advice on safety issues: Offer guidance to schools on topics such as security technology, emergency preparedness, and threat assessment.
- Conduct vulnerability assessments: Assess the safety and security of school facilities and recommend improvements.
- Evaluate processes: Evaluate effectiveness of school safety and security programs. Research and recommend additions and improvements to safety management programs, particularly in areas such as emergency preparedness, accident prevention, general safety, and risk management.
- Serve as the School Resource Officer / Safety Drills Coordinator for Marquette-Alger RESA classroom programs, and complete associated reporting requirements.
- Participate as an active member of the crisis intervention response team for Agency classrooms and programs.
- Recommend and implement procedures and best practices to prevent and deter violence at agency classrooms and other agency properties.
- Perform other duties as assigned

- Demonstrated experience exercising confidentiality and sound judgment in dealing with local districts, staff, students, and operations
- Ability to work on multiple projects and maintain proactive communication with stakeholders
- Ability to deal with issues in a fair manner, treat diverse populations and personalities with dignity and respect, and act in a highly ethical manner
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment yet maintain flexibility in thinking and actions
- Detail-oriented with strong analytical skills; highly skilled with Excel and/or Google Sheets
SPECIAL CONDITIONS:
- Perform position duties and functions while upholding confidentiality of privileged and sensitive information
- Must consistently perform duties and functions thoroughly, accurately, and with strong attention to detail
- Must use sound professional judgment and act effectively to carry out the functions of this position within the direction provided by Marquette-Alger RESA mission, goals, and strategic plan
- Position requires valid driver’s license and ability to routinely travel to local school districts and partner agencies in Marquette and Alger counties; Requires occasional travel to other areas of the State
- Must become certified and maintain certification in Handle With Care de-escalation and response techniques for school professionals
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at a time
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Full time; 12-month position; non-union; Must have regular and reliable job attendance, performance, and the physical ability to do the job
REPORTS TO: Chief Financial Officer
COMPENSATION: Grade 6 on Marquette-Alger RESA Non-Affiliated Salary Schedule; $74,632-$91,788
