Positions at the Water Boards may be eligible for telework with in-person attendance based on the operational needs of the position.

Incumbents in one of these classifications, where a Master’s Degree is required to meet the minimum qualifications, shall receive an educational pay differential equivalent to 2% of their monthly base pay. Those where a Doctoral Degree is required to meet the minimum qualifications, shall receive an educational pay differential equivalent to 3% of their monthly base pay. Individuals with both a Master’s and Doctoral Degree will be given the best benefit in relation to salary shall only be eligible for only one amount.

The State Water Resources Control Board’s Division of Drinking Water has an opening for a Research Scientist IV (Chemical Sciences) in its Regulatory Development Unit.  The position is located at 1001 I Street, Sacramento, CA  95814.

Duties:

This Research Scientist IV position holds primary responsibility for pharmacology, toxicology, and drug, bio-, and immuno- chemistry aspects of drinking water regulation development; applies expert scientific knowledge to conduct highly specialized public health research of statewide sensitivity and policy impact relating to drinking water contaminants and provision of safe drinking water; is a public health subject-matter expert on contaminants/practices w/ potential for adverse public health impact; makes original, independent decisions on complex drinking water scientific problems; provides scientific and technical advice and consultation regarding exposure and public health risks and benefits for drinking water standard development; provides drinking water quality adverse health effect risk communication advice to executive and field management, and; provides interpretations of health research findings for consumers, public water systems, regulators, and policy makers.

Statement of Qualifications

A Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) must be submitted along with the State Application and serves as documentation of candidate’s ability to present information clearly and concisely in writing. It should be typed, no more than two (2) pages in length, using 12-point Arial font , and normal margins.

  1. Describe your knowledge and experience with respect to conducting or reviewing health risk assessments, evaluating human health impacts, assessing exposure pathways and body burdens of chemical pollutants in humans and other biological receptors, and making independent, complex decisions within your field.
  2. Describe your communication skills, including experience in preparing written and oral technical, research, and/or analytical documents, reports, and presentations to both professional and lay audiences, including communicating complex, highly detailed, or data-heavy content.
  3. Describe your experience in planning, organizing, and directing scientific research on chemical occurrence, properties, and analytical method development, particularly involving chemicals of emerging concern. Please indicate if the scientific research was published.
  4. Describe your experience managing multiple projects and assignments with critical deadlines simultaneously and with changing priorities.
  5. Describe your experience and proficiency with statistical software and data analytics and visualization tools.
