Job Description

PRIMARY FUNCTION: Provides for articulation of special education programs for students from birth through age 22. Plans programs, coordinates curriculum resources, and evaluates effectiveness of programs for individuals with exceptional needs. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Observe, consult with, and assist: E (a) Resource Specialists (b) Designated instruction and services providers (c) Special Day Class teachers (d) Other special education personnel
  • Plan programs, coordinate curriculum resources, and evaluate effectiveness of programs for students with disabilities. E
  • Participate in each school's staff and program development and innovation of special methods and approaches. E
  • Provide coordination, consultation and program development. E
  • Is responsible for ensuring that all special education students have access to educational opportunities regardless of the district of residence or disability. E
  • Review programs/student progress and revise programs when changes are necessary. E
  • Provide for articulation of special education programs for students between the ages of birth to 22 years. E
  • Serve as a member of the Individualized Educational Program (IEP) Team. E
  • Coordinate the selection and monitoring of appropriate agencies/community resources to supplement school programs as directed by the IEP Team. E
  • Serve as a liaison and consultant to other professionals, appropriate agencies and community. E
  • Provide advice and input on plans, policies, procedures, or rules related to the program. E
  • Coordinate the process for entry, review and exit for students receiving special education services. E
  • Monitor compliance with federal and state laws and regulations and local procedures. E
  • Plan, coordinate and provide parent education and staff training. E
  • Evaluate effectiveness of program for individuals with exceptional needs, provide coordination, consultation, and program development. E
  • Perform other duties as may be required.

Knowledge And Abilities

Knowledge of: Special education programs Instructional methods and strategies, including accommodations and modifications Current special education law Grade-level content standards and adopted curricula Disabling conditions and their characteristics Ability to: Work independently with minimal direction. Meet schedules and time lines. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Operate a variety of office equipment including a computer and assigned software. Maintain consistent, punctual, and regular attendance. Sit or stand for extended periods of time. Hear and speak to exchange information, use a telephone and make presentations. See to read a variety of materials and monitor student behavior. Move hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard. Motivate students to learn. Analyze current and proposed programs, evaluate alternatives, and adopt effective courses of action. Prepare clear and concise student records and written materials. Travel between work sites as required. Bend at the waist to assist students Reach overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally to retrieve and store files Lift objects up to 25 pounds EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Advanced training and related experience in the education of students with disabilities; specialized, in-depth knowledge in one or more areas of major disabling conditions including infants and preschoolers with developmental delays, or career vocational development. Minimum of three years experience with special education students and programs. Any combination equivalent to Masters Degree from an accredited college or university is preferred. LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Valid Special Education credential, clinical services credential, health services credential, or pupil personnel services with school psychologist authorization; California Drivers License. WORKING CONDITIONS: Working conditions may include, but are not limited to, the following: Environment: Classroom, office, or outdoor environment Contact with hostile or abusive individuals with unpredictable behavior Exposure to childhood and other diseases in a school environment May be required to work in emergency situations
