Job Description

Postdoctoral Researcher Mechanisms and applications of bacterial immune systems Santiago-Frangos Lab

Location: Philadelphia, PA
Open Date: Jan 29, 2024
Deadline:

The Santiago-Frangos lab seeks a motivated and enthusiastic postdoctoral fellow to work in a multidisciplinary team on cutting edge research that determines how immune systems (e.g. CRISPR) function, and that repurposes these mechanistic insights for biotech applications. Relevant research includes our papers published in NSMB and Nat. Comms. , and a patent on a CRISPR-based diagnostic . More info can be found at: .

The postdoctoral fellow will have the opportunity to work on up to two research arms in the lab, that aim to determine how i) bacterial and archaeal CRISPR adaptive immune systems make DNA-based memories of past phage infections, and ii) how CRISPR-generated nucleotide messengers signal an immune response. Candidates interested in biotech applications of CRISPR-mediated immunity are also invited to apply.

Project scope will be tuned to the fellow's interests and skills. Broadly: i) Use a combination of sequence- and structure-based comparative approaches to discover novel biochemical activities and biological functions, or ii) develop biochemical assays to test bioinformatics-based hypotheses, and determine the structures of large protein and protein-nucleic acid complexes using cryo-EM.

Lab and Institution Overview

The Santiago-Frangos lab integrates bioinformatics, biochemistry, and structural biology to address complex biological and biotechnological questions (). The Santiago-Frangos lab values Curiosity, Open communication, Integrity, a Growth mindset, and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. • One published first-author research paper in a peer-reviewed journal.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Independently motivated to develop, conduct, analyze and document research experiments and results.

Postdoctoral Fellows Receive a minimum stipend of $65,000.
