The High Energy Physics Group at Purdue University has an opening for a postdoctoral research associate to work on the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment. The Purdue CMS group consistently contributes to many aspects of CMS, including hardware, software, and physics analysis. The group's current physics analysis activities include measuring Standard Model (SM) processes, searching for new heavy gauge bosons, and the study of the Higgs boson. In addition, our group plays an active role in CMS tracker detector upgrade projects using in-house facilities to design, develop, build, and test semiconductor detector modules and their support structures. We also operate a Tier-2 computer center, providing resources for data analysis both locally and as part of the CMS computing Grid.
The successful candidate is expected to devote 60% of the time to the CMS 40 MHz scouting system, including Run–3 demonstrator data analysis and the design of the Phase-2 system.
Such topics include, but are not limited to, real-time reconstruction based on ML algorithms, regional readout/on-chip filtering of the pixel detector, and real-time systems based on heterogeneous computing platforms. The candidate is also expected to contribute to CMS Run-3 operations, hls4ml[1] and SONIC[2] development and deployment, and efficient algorithms adapted to scouting applications. The candidate will also contribute to on-going analysis activities in Run-3 di-Higgs search, multiboson physics, searches for lepton flavor violation decays or quantum information science aspects of top physics using ML techniques.
The candidate will become a member of the NSF HDR A3D3 institute and be co-supervised by A3D3 HEP PI Prof. Phil Harris (MIT). The candidate is expected to work closely with graduate and undergraduate students. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in experimental particle physics, excellent data analysis, advanced computing and programming skills, and the ability to carry out an independent research program. The selected candidate is expected to be based at CERN, with occasional travels to Fermilab and Purdue.
The position is available immediately, and to ensure full consideration, applications should be received by November 1st, 2024. The appointment is initially for one year, with the potential extension considered yearly after that. Questions and inquiries should be sent to Prof. Mia Liu (liu3173@purdue.edu). Interested candidates should send a CV, including a list of publications with major contributions and invited talks, a research statement, and arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent directly to Kristin Deweese (deweese@purdue.edu) or Mia Liu (liu3173@purdue.edu).
Applications will be considered until the position is filled.
Purdue University is an Equal Opportunity Affirmative Action Employer. Applications from minority and female candidates are encouraged.
