JCFPL JOB TITLE: NJ Room Digital Projects Librarian

DEPARTMENT: NJ Room

LOCATION: Gardner Main

REPORTS TO: NJ Room Department Manager (Librarian III)

CIVIL SERVICE JOB TITLE: Librarian I

SALARY RANGE: $59,995 - $64,504 per year

FULL-TIME/PART-TIME: Full-Time

WORKWEEK: 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.  (scheduled 35 hours/week). Will be required to work evenings and weekends as needed.
JOB DUTIES:

 
  • As part of the New Jersey Room and reporting to the Department Head, the individual in this role is responsible for providing support for planning and implementation for digital asset creation, management and preservation, in addition to other routine work in local history reference and programming.
  • Work with NJ Room staff on designing, documenting and overseeing efficient digital production workflows supporting the creation of digital objects/assets, assists with metadata creation, and collaborates on the design, documentation and oversight of efficient digital production.
  • Under supervision, collaborate with other departments of Gardner Main Library to enhance awareness of and access to library’s digital content and services.
  • Serve as reference staff support in the New Jersey Room and collaborates in ongoing efforts to improve reference services through outreach, archival processing and subject pathfinders. Monitors and responds to library chat system.
  • Collaborate on design, development, and implementation of innovative programs and services based on local history collections at the library, off-site, and/or virtual; share program information with Communications team, including photos, blurbs, booklists, etc.
  • Contribute to tasks and projects; track and review work progress and activities; provide feedback on policies and procedures and relay them to other staff members
  • Promote good customer service, including some public speaking involving tours and teaching library skills to small groups; effectively handle patron complaints; develop and maintain a positive, helpful and professional approach to the overall community as well as individual library customers; improve ADA accessibility (physical and digital access)
  • Network and collaborate with Outreach Services, educational entities, City departments, and other service agencies to promote services, activities, and goals of the library; build on library participation in the NJ/DE Hub of the Digital Public Library of America and other digital collection consortia. Support NJ Room Outreach Librarian as needed, attend meetings and serve on committees as needed; stay up to date on trends and innovations in the fields of library and educational services.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION:

 
  • Ability to demonstrate a practical knowledge of library functions, services, terminology, techniques, procedures, and standard tools such as ILS (Integrated Library Systems), shelving arrangements, Dewey Decimal Classification System.
  • A Master’s degree in Library or Information Science in a library program accredited by the American Library Association or from a New Jersey college Master’s program in Library Science that has been deemed acceptable by Thomas Edison College.
ADDITIONAL RELEVANT SKILLS:

 
  • The ideal candidate will have experience with digital collections; participating in technical project planning; knowledge of current and developing digital history and resource access projects; the digitization of legacy local history special collections; the ability to perform both independently and as a team member; experience in effectively instructing and training peers and the public in the use of resources; excellent communication skills; enthusiasm, courtesy, flexibility and a sense of humor.
  • Ability to manage and administer a library program.
  • Knowledge of Jersey City’s population, geography, and/or local government.
  • Facility in a non-English language spoken in Jersey City (such as Spanish, Hindi, Arabic, Tagalog, etc.).
