Job Description

The College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, and the Department of Physics at the University of Michigan invite applications for a LEO Lecturer I for Physics Introductory Courses/Labs position at 100% effort for the Fall 2024 term.  This appointment is scheduled to begin on August 26, 2024 and end on December 31, 2024.

This position would teach 6-8 lab sections/term or no more than two separate preps (or the equivalent of two courses). 

Duties of these LEO Lecturer I positions are expected to include teaching, developing course materials, evaluating and grading students, and holding regularly scheduled office hours.

Based on enrollments and need, the individual hired to fill this position could be assigned to teach a variety of labs or courses, including any of the following:

Courses:
Physics 140/240: General Physics I & II
Biophysics/Physics 150/250: Fundamental Physics for Life Sciences I & II
Physics 160/260: Honors Physics I & II

Labs:
Physics 141/241: Elementary Laboratory I & II
Physics 151/251: Physics for the Life Sciences Laboratory I & II
Physics 161/261: Honors Introductory Mechanics Lab & Honors Electricity and Magnetism Lab

All courses and labs are in-person; the instructor is expected to be present on-campus. 

  • Master's degree in Physics or a related field (Astronomy, Engineering, Math) or a Bachelor's degree and equivalent experience.
  • Experience teaching courses and labs in Physics or the Natural/Physical Sciences.

The selection criteria used for this search is based on how the applicant's education and experience meets the required minimum qualifications for the position. Excellence in teaching and instruction will be the principal criteria used to select the successful candidate.

Ph.D. in Physics or a related field
Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated excellence in college-level teaching in the United States cutting edge and contemporary knowledge and experience in research and teaching in the field. 

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Lecturers Employee Organization, AFL-CIO, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
