External Organizer

Based out of Portland, OR
(requires regular travel)

The Oregon Federation of Nurses and Health Professionals, AFT Local 5017, AFL-CIO (OFNHP), represents nearly 7,000 nurses and health professionals in Oregon and Southwest Washington, most of whom are employees of Kaiser Permanente and PeaceHealth, with a growing number from Labcorp, the Legacy/OHSU Health system, and Adventist.

External Organizer: The External Organizer is responsible for new union growth, including building relationships with and assessing workers, building and maintaining lists, mapping worksites, identifying and developing worksite leaders, and recruiting and developing organizing committee members and activists. Everything from probing and initial outreach to representation elections and post-election work through contract ratification. The work requires considerable travel throughout the I-5 corridor and elswhere in Oregon and SW Washington.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Attend regular meetings with supervisor and team to discuss progress, plan actions, and organize next steps.
  • Develop a representative organizing committee to advance the campaign(s).
  • Write turf plans to implement the overall organizing campaign and develop and implement strategies to counter anti-union campaigns.
  • Conduct one-on-one organizing conversations through calls; in-person and virtual meetings; and work site and home visits to accurately assess, recruit, and develop supporters and leaders.
  • Lead organizing committee meetings with worker leaders to advance the goals of the campaign and organization.
  • Enter assessments and other data collected in a database on a regular basis.
  • Driving, travel, temporary assignments, and extended work hours are required.

Experience, Skills, and Knowledge Required:

  • Minimum of 3 years external organizing work
  • Possess fundamental knowledge of labor law and union organizing practice and principles.
  • Ability to identify, recruit, and develop activists/worker leaders to identify issues, strategize solutions, and advance the work of organizing committees.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Exceptional planning and time management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently.
  • Demonstrated self-starter.
  • Commitment to social justice and the organizing model of unionism.
  • Experience and knowledge of computer programs, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; Google docs, sheets, and related programs; and organizing database software (such as Action Builder or Knack, for example).
  • Willingness and ability to work long and irregular hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Willingness and ability to travel for work assignments.
  • Be in possession of a reliable/insured vehicle and valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience externally organizing in healthcare settings.
  • Experience running contract actions teams.
  • Experience negotiating first contracts in the private sector.

Supervision:
Reports to OFNHP President or designee.
