Job Description

Nature of Work Under general supervision, at the entry or beginning level, provides a variety of counseling services for the inmate population in a Correctional Facility. Positions may vary as to predominant job functions or areas of specialization from facility to facility. Areas of specialization include: vocational counseling, substance abuse counseling and guidance for inmates on work release. Performs related work as required. Examples of work include: interviews with inmates upon arrival to facility and/or specific programs, write a summary of the session, gather pertinent information, and draft strategy or course work. Meet with inmates on a regular basis to discuss progress, to address problems or needs that need to be addressed and to inform the inmate of changes in the program or schedule. Maintain records to go in to permanent files. Write monthly reports to document work with inmates achievement in progress, activities held or problems encountered. Counsels inmates in crisis situations, deals with potential violent or suicidal inmates to stabilize their behaviors. Arrange ministerial, phycological or employment counseling outside the facility.   • I have a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in criminal justice, corrections, psychology, sociology, counseling, counseling and guidance, criminology, social work, education, therapeutic recreation or closely related field. (Please note these degrees are not considered qualifying: political science, history, religion unless it mentions education or counseling.)
  • I have four (4) years of experience in the area of corrections or related fields. Examples of qualifying experience are: counseling, rehab counselor, correctional officer, social worker, CPS worker, behavioral health aide/technician, career counselor. Experience that will NOT qualify: law enforcement without counseling experience, camp counselor, direct care, adoption assessments.
  • I have a combination of college hours and experience in the area of corrections or related fields that equals four (4) years total.
  • I do not qualify in any of the above ways.
