Art History
The Barnard Art History Department emphasizes the need to understand art produced in the broadest possible range of mediums from across the world. We would welcome an emerging scholar in the discipline who contributes to the diversification of our course offerings in terms of geographical region (especially the art of China, South Asia, Africa, and the African diaspora). We welcome scholars whose methodologies engage issues of race, gender, sexuality, religion, and experiences of colonialism, displacement and enslavement, among other things, and would be delighted in the opportunity for more courses and casual interactions which center on these topics. Our ideal scholar has expertise beyond Europe, the U.S., and Latin America, and engages with critical approaches and/or material practices that expand upon traditional art history.
We would offer the fellow a vibrant community which gathers regularly for scholarly talks at Barnard and at Columbia, presentations by major artists in our Visual Arts program, opportunities to mentor undergraduate scholars and artists in structured and unstructured ways as well as the wealth of opportunities provided by New York City, a world center for art. The department has often in the past developed special programming with visiting faculty and we would commit to working with a fellow on preparing at least one major public or scholarly event in line with their interests.
